Intro.

The Professional Wrestling world is a funny old thing, especially as the landscape is forever changing. AEW has been a massive part of how we look at the industry today, the promotion might only be seven years, but it’s made several moments that will go down in the history anals of this sport. A lot can be said about how tribalism has ruined Professional Wrestling, but if those so called fans gave AEW a chance, then they might be able to find something that they like. So for this piece i’m going to take a look at the moments and storylines when AEW set themselves for great things.

5. Dynamite Grandslam 2021.

In June of 2021 it was rumoured that AEW would be running a show at Grand Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. This would be an episode of Dynamite titled Grandslam, because it was going down in the same stadium that annually holds the U.S Open Tennis tournament. This episode would be headlined by Dr Britt Baker vs Ruby Soho for the AEW Womens Championship, and was opened up by one of the greatest Pro Wrestling Matches that i’ve ever seen in Kenny Omega vs Bryan Danielson. This Match set the tone for AEW showing the world that they can run stadiums. ( More on this later )

4. Stadium Stampede Match.

Back in the early days of the promotion the world was put behind closed doors due to the on growing concerns surrounding the Covid 19 pandemic. This would lead the way for Matches to become cinematic. WWE would start off this trend during Wrestlemania 36, with The Undertaker vs Aj Styles Boneyard Match, and the Firefly Funhouse Match between john Cena, and Bray Wyatt. For my Money I didn’t like The Firefly Funhouse Match, because it was two abstract for my taste, however AEW’s Stadium Stampede set the standard for fun. This would go on to be a staple for the company as the years have gone on.

3. Swerve Strickland vs Hangman Adam Page.

AEW over it’s short lifespan of seven Years has told some of the best Story’s in Pro Wrestling. Great examples of this are Hangman Adam Page vs The Elite. Cm Punk vs MJF. The rise of Will Osperay, and then there’s this underrated little gem. This feud between Hangman Adam Page and Swerve Strickland, from Swerve cutting a promo over Hangmans baby. Drinking some lovely blood. Hangman burning down Swerves childhood, to both men in some critics minds overstepping the mark when it came to violence inside a Lights Out Steelcage Match. Fans online praised the Match for its cpmplex take on how violence is portrayed, whilst Jim Cornette on his podcast The Jim Cornette Expierience slammed it, saying it was an insult to Professional Wrestling. I fell in with the online fans opinions. I think that the violence that including a syringe, a staple gunn, and multiple shots to the head, were needed as this was the end to a year long blood feud.

2. Fighting During The Wednesday Night Wars.

The Wednesday Night Wars were a time to be alive, and a time in which content creators got no sleep. AEW Dynamite, and WWE NXT would go head to head every Wednesday, and this signal competition from the start. Acts like Charlotte Flair, and Finn Balor were sent down to WWE’s Black and Gold Brand, so that the starting up AEW Dynamite which was airing on TNT at the same time. AEW continued to bet it’s best foot forward, as the WWE struggled, for over 18 months AEW beat the WWE, as the fan tribalism started to echo online. AEW eventually won, and NXT was forced to move to Tuesday Nights on the USA Network.

1.AEW Runs London Wembley Stadium.

On the april 5th editioin of AEW Dynamite a video that had been shot earlier in the day, was shown to the fans inside the arena. It was hosted by Nigel Mcguinness, and he was interviewing Tony Khan, who told fans about how the company came to be, and how it came off the back off a show called All In, it was at this point when he introduced Adam Cole, who said that on August 27th 2023 AEW would be making its UK debut at the Iconic Wembley Stadium. This was massive, and when i’m feeling down. I watch this video back on Youtube, because this makes me think that anything is possible. AEW would continue to run Wembley as the years would go on. Also i’m a bit biased because i’ve attended all three AEW All In PPV’s that have come from London.
